What Winnowed holds about you, what it holds about the companies it finds, and what you can do about either.
Winnowed holds your email address and your subscription record, because you are a customer. It holds a count of how much you have used it. It holds no contact details at all: not yours to sell, not anybody else's. The contact details you build with Winnowed are read by the application on your own computer and saved to your own disk. They never reach us.
Winnowed is provided by Winnowed Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 17488839, registered office 66 Paul Street, London EC2A 4NA. For anything on this page, write to hans@winnowed.co.uk.
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address | To send your subscription key, your receipt, and anything that affects your subscription | While you are a customer, then 7 years for tax records |
| Your subscription key, plan and expiry | So the application knows the subscription is current | As above |
| A date last used, and a running total of companies and searches served | To see that a subscription is being used, and to notice an unusual amount of it | As above |
| Which companies your subscription has been given: the company number, which list it came in, and the date. For each list, the industry codes and area it was built from | So a new list leaves out companies you have already had and you are never charged twice for one, and so your most recent list can be handed back free if a run stops | While you are a customer, including across renewals. Ask us after you leave and we delete it |
| Your email address, if you asked for the guide | To send you the guide | Until you unsubscribe, which is one click in the email |
The lawful basis for the first 3 is performance of a contract, because we cannot run your subscription without them. The guide is consent, given when you asked for it, and withdrawn whenever you like.
We keep which companies you have been given, and the industry codes and area each list was built from, because without them you would pay again for companies you already have and could not get an interrupted list back. We keep no contact details you found and nothing about what you did with a list. The company numbers we hold are public register entries, and we use them for nothing but your own lists.
When you ask the application for a list, it sends us the trade you typed and the postcode and radius, and we send back the companies on the public register that match: a company number, a name, a town and a postcode.
When the application cannot work out a company's website on its own, it asks us to look it up. We make that search, return what we find, and keep none of it.
Every contact page is fetched by the application on your computer, using your connection. Every email address, telephone number and trading address it reads is written to a file on your disk. None of it is transmitted to Winnowed, and there is no account holding a copy.
2 sources, and neither is a person.
The list of companies comes from the free Companies House bulk register, the public record of every registered company in the United Kingdom. Winnowed uses the company number, name, registered town, postcode and industry code. It does not ingest officer records, which is where the people are.
Sole traders cannot appear at all, because they do not register at Companies House.
The application then visits each company's own website and reads the contact details published there. What the crawler does, how often, and how to stop it is set out at winnowed.co.uk/bot.
Where the only address a business publishes belongs to a named individual rather than the business (jane@ rather than info@), that address is discarded on your machine, before it is written to any file. You get the company, its website and its telephone number instead, and the row records that the address was withheld and why.
There is no setting to turn that off. It is the one thing this product will not put in a file.
If your company appears in a list somebody built with Winnowed, the details came from your own website or from the public register. Winnowed holds no copy of them.
You can:
robots.txt rule, or an email to hans@winnowed.co.uk. Both are honoured and neither needs a reason. See the crawler page.Winnowed does not know who has your details, because it never held them to give away. If somebody has emailed you using a list they built with Winnowed, we cannot identify them for you and we cannot make them stop. What we can do is make sure the crawler never visits you again, which is what stops you appearing in the next one.
