If you sell to hotels, your market is bigger than most people think. There are 17,011 active hotel companies on the United Kingdom register, and every one of them is a prospect.
The useful question is where to start. Some of those hotels publish an email address or a phone number on their own website, so you can contact them today with no further work. We wanted to know how many.
We checked a sample of 900 hotel companies, grouped by size, and applied each group's result to its share of the whole register.
| Size of company | Hotels on the register | In our sample | Publish a way to reach them | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Established | 1,282 | 78 | 16 | 21 in 100 |
| Small | 6,965 | 422 | 66 | 16 in 100 |
| Micro | 4,506 | 200 | 16 | 8 in 100 |
| Newly formed | 4,258 | 200 | 10 | 5 in 100 |
Across all 17,011, that comes to about 1,900 hotels with an address or number the hotel itself chose to publish. Those are your open doors.
Start with the open doors. About 1,900 hotels you can write to or ring this week is a real campaign, and every one of those details came from the hotel's own website.
The other 15,000 are still your market. A hotel that publishes no email address has not gone anywhere. It has a switchboard, a registered office, directors on the public register, and often a group behind it with accounts and news coverage. Reaching those takes a different method, and part 4 of our guide covers the free ones.
Size tells you where to look first. An established hotel company is about 4 times as likely to publish a way to reach it as a newly formed one. If you want quick wins, begin with small and established companies.
Winnowed gives you the whole market in 1 file: every hotel company, with the contact details where they are published and the reason where they are not. Use it as the base your other prospecting builds on.
A note on the figures: each rate comes from 1 run, and the newly formed rate rests on 10 hotels, so read 1,900 as "about".
